Aodh Ruadh rally to beat St Naul’s in Donegal intermediate championship

Aodh Ruadh came from behind to beat St Naul’s by a point, on a final scoreline of 1-12 to 1-11 in Saturday’s Group B game of the Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure intermediate football championship, played at Fr Tierney Park in Ballyshannon.

Last year’s beaten county finalists needed a positive result after drawing with Naomh Mhuire in their opening game last weekend – and they looked to be in trouble at half-time as they trailed Naul’s by 1-5 to 0-4. But they finished strongly  with Niall Murray’s goal and Nathan Boyle’s three points proving to be pivotal scores as the Ballyshannon side picked up their first win of the Group B campaign.

In the senior championship, defending county champions Gweedore had to dig deep to overcome St Michael’s at the Bridge on a final scoreline of 1-8 to 1-3. A gale force wind had a big bearing on this contest. Gweedore, playing with the aid of it, managed six points in the opening half to lead by 0-6 to 1-0.

However, Michael’s were unable to take full advantage of the elements in the second half-hour and Gary McFadden’s goal late in the second-half guided the county champions to a crucial victory.

In Saturday’s other senior championship games,  Naomh Conaill beat Dungloe by 16 points in Group B. Milford also made it two wins out of two in Group C with an impressive 1-17 to 3-8 victory against Glenfin.
