An Bord Pleanala gives go ahead for work on dangerous section of N16 route

An Bord Pleanala has given the go-ahead for work on one of the worst sections of the N16 Sligo to Manorhamilton road.

The section goes from the Drum Road to north of the Glencar road, between the townlands of Drumkilsellagh and Lugnagall.

The work will include realignment, which will reduce journey times and improve safety.

Cycle tracks are also to be provided

Sligo County County Council has also confirmed a compulsory purchase order for almost 24 hectares of land.

The next stage in the process is the completion of detailed design and the preparation of contract documents . . . .this will proceed in the coming months subject to approval from Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

Local Fine Gael Councillor Tom Fox says it’s welcome news:

Cllr Fox says improvement of the N16 is vital for the safety of road users, for the creation of jobs and for cross-border trade.

And he recalled how his father, the late Cllr Tom Fox, had a motion about this road on the council agenda as far back as 1979.
