Sligo and Letterkenny hospitals working to reduce gynaecology waiting times

A Donegal cancer advocacy group is seeking answers as to why there are 1,783 women waiting to see a gynaecologist at Letterkenny University Hospital.

Meanwhile, at Sligo University Hospital, there are 870 people waiting for a gynaecology appointment, of which 103 now have an appointment date.

Letterkenny University Hospital management and the gynaecology team there say they are working to reduce to reduce waiting times, and particularly to ensure high-risk cases are seen promptly.

The hospital is now also recruiting a fifth obstetrician and gynaecologist.

But if there’s already four obstetricians and gynaecologists in Letterkenny, Betty Holmes, of Donegal Action for Cancer Care, is wondering why the waiting list is so long.

She was speaking on the North West Today Show:

Meanwhile, in response to queries from Ocean Fm News, the Saolta University Health Care Group says there are 870 people on the waiting list for a Gynaecology Department appointment at Sligo University Hospital.

Of this 870, 103 have an appointment date.

Saolta says referrals are triaged — or clinically prioritised –by the consultants so that any urgent cases are dealt with in a timely manner.

The service has appointed a fourth consultant, and there are additional clinics taking place to deal with the waiting list.

The majority of people on the waiting list in Sligo– 558 — are waiting under 9 months.
