U.S. vicepresident’s cousin in Tubbercurry hopes he’ll visit Doocastle during expected trip to Ireland

A South Sligo cousin of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence says she hopes he will visit his ancestral area in Doocastle, near Tubbercury, during an expected trip to Ireland next month.

A number of invitations from Sligo have been sent to the vicepresident’s office, including one from Sligo County Council.

Mike Pence’s grandfather, Richard Michael Cawley, emigrated from the Doocastle area, arriving on Ellis Island, in New York Harbour, on April 11th 1923.

He eventually settled in Chicago, where he drove a bus for 40 years . . . history which Vice President Pence himself recalled in a speech in the U.S. earlier this year during a citizenship ceremony.

However, despite numerous media reports, there is, so far, no official confirmation that the vicepresident will visit Ireland or that he is coming to Sligo.

But his cousin, Imelda Cawley, from Tubbercurry, hopes he will make a return to the locality from where his forebears came:
