Sligo Rovers chairman elected to new FAI board

Sligo Rovers chairman Martin Heraghty was one of two League of Ireland representatives to be elected to the Football Association of Ireland’s new ‘interim’ board at Saturday’s AGM in Trim, county Meath.

Heraghty (Sligo Rovers) and Dick Shakespeare (UCD) take the League of Ireland seats, with John Finnegan and Dave Moran voted in from amateur football, John Earley from the schoolboys/schoolgirls group and Joe O’Brien from the Colleges FAI representing a new parish of smaller affiliates.

Listen to Heraghty’s interview with Ocean FM Sport here:

Donal Conway was elected unopposed as the president of the FAI for another year, with Paul Cooke winning the vote for the vice president position.

Conway received 134 votes out of a possible 140, with five voting against and one abstention. His decision to stand for election was divisive in official circles, with Minister for Sport Shane Ross opposed to the idea and Sport Ireland also voicing their concerns.

Within two years, the FAI will need to have a 33% representation of females on the board.

As it stands, the eight members coming through football channels are all male.

Four independent candidates will be nominated by September.
