Gardai carry out searches at farms in Sligo & Leitrim



Members of the Gardai have conducted planned searches at a number of farms, houses and a commercial premises in Sligo and Leitrim this morning.

The operation was part of an ongoing investigation being conducted by members of The Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation into offences of deception.

This morning a total of seven sites were searched across locations in Leitrim, Sligo Roscommon, Westmeath and Kilkenny.

The Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation was assisted by officials from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine as well as the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

Farms, houses and a commercial premises were searched as part of the investigation into offences of deception.

These offences relate to fraudulent practices regarding the tampering of identification passports and microchips of horses presented for slaughter.

The officers were also supported by members from the Criminal Assets Bureau, Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau.

Gardai say for operational reasons and as this is a search and evidence gathering phase of an ongoing investigation, they will not be commenting further at this time.
