Knock Airport is celebrating it’s 33rd anniversary

Ireland West Airport at Knock is celebrating its 33rd anniversary.

The airport opened on 25th October 1985 with three Aer Lingus charter flights to Rome.

But the official opening was performed on 30 May 1986 by the then Taoiseach, the late Charles Haughey.

In it’s first year of operation, it catered for 9,000 passengers; It’s now catering for more than 800,000 a year.

Donal Healy, of Ireland West Airtport, has been telling our reporter Gary Feeney the extraordinary story that all started with an idea from the parish priest of Knock, the late Monsignor James Horan.
