Leitrim minors lose to Mayo in Connacht championship opener

There was disappointment for Leitrim’s minor gaelic footballers at Ballinamore on Friday evening as they suffered a heavy 1-20 to 0-6 defeat to Mayo in their opening game of the 2019 Connacht minor football championship.

Joe Honeyman’s side were competitive enough in the opening half but trailed by 0-8 to 0-4. However, they had no answer to Mayo’s scoring power in the second 30 minutes as the green and red ran out comfortable 17-point winners.

In the evening’s other game at Dr Hyde Park, Roscommon scored a two-point win over Galway on a final scoreline of 1-17 to 1-15. Sligo minors have a bye this opening weekend.

The 2019 Connacht MFC is being played on a round-robin basis. The top team after four games will qualify directly for the Connacht final – with the second and third-placed teams contesting a semi-final.
