Call for 50-bed ‘modular’ unit at Sligo hospital

Sligo county councillors have agreed to call on the Minister for Health to provide funding for a new 50-bed unit at Sligo University Hospital.

At their meeting today — the last before the election — they supported the motion put forward by Fianna Fail councillor and election candidate Rosaleen O Grady, who proposed that a so-called modular unit be provided for the 50 beds.

But she and other councillors pointed that what was really needed was an eighty or ninety million euro extension to the hospital.

However, she says that in the meantime, unless more beds are put into the system, there will continue to be people kept in emergency departments and on trolleys.
