Call to have Carrowmore megalithic cemetery named as Unesco World Heritage site

There are proposals to include Carrowmore tombs in Sligo on a list of Unesco World Heritage sites.

Carrowmore is the largest and among the oldest cemeteries of megalithic tombs in Ireland.

The motion was put forward by Fine Gael Cllr Sinead Maguire at Monday’s meeting of Sligo County Council.

A World Heritage Site is a landmark or area which is selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as having cultural, historical or scientific significance.

Director of Services for Sligo County Council Dorothy Clarke says they will write to the Minister for Heritage Josepha Madigan and consult with the local authority’s heritage officer about the issue.

Cllr Maguire says there are a number of advantages to having the location listed as a world heritage site.
