HSE statement on psychology service in Leitrim

The HSE says there is no process underway by it to recruit a permanent psychologist to cover county Leitrim.

The HSE was responding to recent comments by Leitrim Sinn Fein Councillor Brendan Barry on Ocean FM News.

The HSE, in a statement, says: ‘The Sligo/Leitrim Early Intervention Teams have 1 wholetime equivalent senior psychologist in post.

‘The HSE has contracted in another psychologist to carry out a number of (school transition ) psychology assessments to endeavour to have these assessments completed in March when the National Council for Special Education requires health professional reports recommending school/educational resources. This is not a permanent or ongoing arrangement.’

The HSE adds that in relation to disability services for children of school going age, a senior psychologist has accepted the post and is due to commence in post in early July 2019.

The psychologist will provide psychology assessment and intervention to school going children in Sligo and Leitrim, the HSE says.
