Sligo County Council is calling on the Transport Minister and the Road Safety Authority to make it easier for people returning from the U.S. to get driving licences here.
Fine Gael Councillor Dara Mulvey says people coming home from America are allowed to drive for 12 months but then have to go through the full process of applying for a licence, including doing an Essential Driver Training course.
He says this is the situation even though such people may have been driving for years in the U.S.
