Increase in wild deer a problem for farmers, a danger to motorists

A mild winter has led to an increase in the door population.

And that’s a matter of concern for both farmers and landowners.

For farmers, there’s concern over damage to fences, crops and young trees.

And for road users, mostly in rural areas, there’s the danger of collisions between the animals and vehicles.

The issue was raised at this morning’s meeting of Sligo councillors from the Tubbercurry Municipal District.

Independent Councillor Michael Clarke called on the county council to put up signs warning about deer on the Hungry Rock Mountain Road, near Coolaney.

He says there’s been a big increase in deer numbers in the Ox Mountain area of Sligo.
