After comments made about eating meat, a Donegal TD says the Taoiseach should be promoting Irish beef

A Donegal TD has challenged the Taoiseach over remarks he made about eating meat.

Leo Varadkar told the Dail yesterday he was trying to cut down on how much red meat he eats for health reasons and to help reduce his carbon footprint.

However, a number of TDs took issue with the Taoiseach’s comments, with the Fianna Fail spokesman on agriculture, Charlie McConalogue, saying he should be promoting Irish beef.

However, Mr Varadkar assured TDs he was not becoming a vegan, adding that he was happy to eat all of the ‘wonderful’ produce from Irish farmers and fishermen, including fish landed in Deputy McConalogue’s own county of Donegal.
