Call for protection of Queen Maeve cairn atop Knocknarea

A Sligo councillor is hitting out at what he says is ‘the small minority’ of people who interfere with the Queen Maeve cairn on Knocknarea mountain, one of the oldest archaeological monuments in the world.

Sinn Fein Councillor Chris MacManus says some people walk on the cairn and remove stones from it.

He now wants Sligo County Council to contact the OPW about the problem.

He says the cairn must be protected as a significant archaeological, historical and tourist attraction.
