North West residents have longest A& E journeys

People living in Leitrim and Donegal have some of the furthest distances in the country to travel to their nearest emergency department.

Apart from residents in Carlow, the two counties in the north west fared the worst when it came to the travel time to their closest A & E.

Leitrim residents are on average 39km from their nearest A&E, and Donegal people have 36km to travel when in need of emergency care.

Feargal O’Neill, CEO of Gamma, who carried out the research, says by processing Eircode data and using location intelligent software they can determine access to A&E departments.
