A kilo of sliver offered for first salmon on Drowes river

A kilo of silver is being offered to the person who catches the first salmon of the year in a Leitrim River.

The River Drowes Salmon Fishery say it will give the prize, worth €750, to the person who lands the first salmon to celebrate the International Year of the Salmon 2019.

In 2018, the first salmon of the year in the country was recorded in the river on the 30th of January.

This year, the first salmon was caught on the Lackagh River in Co. Donegal by Michael McCann of Templeard, Derry on Tuesday, 1st of January.

Shane Gallagher of Drowes Salmon Fisheries says the prize is an effort to highlight the importance of angling to the Irish economy.
