Donegal make winning start to McKenna Cup

Donegal began their defence of the Dr McKenna Cup on Sunday with a comfortable 0-21 to 0-11 victory against Queen’s in their opening Section A match at Ballybofey.

Declan Bonner’s side mpressed from the start and the students had no answer to the early pace and power of the home side as they established a commanding 0-10 to 0-02 lead after 23 minutes. The returning Eoin McHugh, Michael Langan and Ciaran Thompson all impressed during the opening 35 minutes, with each player either scoring or creating scores for others.

Queen’s did improve in the second half and caused a largely youthful and experimental Donegal more problems after the break but the closest they got to Bonner’s men was 6 points. Donegal tagged on points through Lorcan Connor, Paul Brennan, Michael Langan and Man of the Match Ciaran Thompson to close out the game.

Donegal will travel to Newry next Sunday (Jan 6th) to play Down. Paddy Tally’s side lost out to Cavan on Sunday by a point in their opening group game, on a final scoreline of 0-13 to 1-9.
