Following a meeting of councillors from the Manorhamilton Municipal District yesterday the decision has been taken for the Council to contact the Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed in relation to what procedures his department have in place for monitoring meat factories as regards the numbers of Sheep from Northern Ireland and Scotland that are slaughtered here each week and marketed as ‘Irish’.
Councillor Justin Warnock put forward the motion which received full support from the other councillors in the Municipal District.
The motion has also called for the Department to monitor the number of cows from Northern Ireland that are culled south of the border and also branded as ‘Irish product’.
Speaking earlier to Ocean FM Councillor Warnock says that these numbers are having a negative impact on the prices that farmers here are getting for sheep and cattle.
