More baled silage means farmers have less use for old tyres



A Sligo councillor is calling for a special collection day for old tyres.

Independent Councillor Marie Casserly also wants Sligo County Council to seek some of the government funding recently announced to help local authorities properly dispose of stockpiles of tyres.

One area on which large numbers of tyres have accumulated is farms, where they were used as weights on the plastic covering silage pits.

But more farmers are now making baled silage, which does not require pits or tyres.

Cllr Casserly says there could now be an opportunity to dispose of unwanted tyres in an environmentally friendly way:
