Blow to Gurteen as post office closure set to go ahead

Post office services in another north west rural area are set to end.

This time it’s in the south Sligo village of Gurteen, where a local effort to retain the post office has been unsuccessful.

First came the announcement of post offices that were slated to close after post masters agreed to take retirement packages.

Now comes the news of various local campaign groups being unsuccessful in their submissions putting forward the case to keep post offices open in their areas.

Earlier this week, it was Maugherow, in north Sligo.

Now it’s Gurteen, in south Sligo.

Local Fianna Fail Councillor in Gurteen, Paul Taylor, spoke to Ocean FM News this afternoon.

He says local people in the area are deeply disappointed:

Meanwhile, it seems An Post is holding the line on its planned closures.

So what’s next for people in areas such as Gurteen.
