Female Councillors now hold positions of Mayor and deputy-Mayor of Sligo



Two women now hold the positions of mayor and deputy mayor of Sligo.

Fianna Fail Councillor Rosaleen O Grady was unanimously selected as mayor at this afternoon’s annual general meeting of the Sligo Municipal District in Sligo Town Hall.

She becomes mayor for the fourth time and succeeds Fine Gael Councillor Hubert Keaney.

However, since the abolition of the borough councils, the mayor is now just the chairperson of the municipal district.

While honoured to be chosen as mayor, Cllr O Grady accepted the abolition of the borough councils — and the follow-on downgrading of the role of mayor — has been a retrograde step:

Meanwhile, another woman, Fine Gael Councillor Sinead Maguire, was chosen as deputy mayor.

She says she does not believe the role of mayor is now seen as less than it once was:
