Donegal too strong for Cavan in championship opener

Donegal will face Derry in an Ulster quarter-final on Sunday week after successfully defeating Cavan in yesterday’s championship opener.

Ryan McHugh and substitute Cian Mulligan netted in each half as Declan Bonner’s side defeated the Breffni men by 2-20 to 1-15 in Ballybofey.

In Connacht, Sligo will be away to Galway in the Connacht semi-finals on June 3, after the Tribesmen beat Mayo by 1-12 to 0-12 in yesterday’s quarter-final.

A bad day for Stephen Rochford’s side was compounded by Diarmuid O’Connor’s red card and a serious injury picked up by Charlestown’s Tom Parsons that looks to have ended his season.

In hurling, Donegal began their Nicky Rackard Cup campaign on Saturday with an impressive victory over Tyrone away from home.

Donegal are at home to Leitrim in Letterkenny in round two next weekend.
