Survey being carried out on Owenmore River in Sligo

A detailed survey of a section of the Owenmore River is now being carried out in preparation for drainage work later.

It’s the latest in a decades-long saga that has still not been resolved, with land along the river flooded to this day.

Responsibility for the maintenance of the Owenmore Drainage District lies with Sligo County Council.

The council engaged JBA Consulting to carry out a survey of the river so as to come up with a programme of works for its ongoing maintenance.

Last month, a presentation on a draft report was made to councillors in the Ballymote/Tubbercurry area and to members of the Owenmore Drainage Committee.

In a statement to Ocean FM News, the council say it was agreed at that meeting that JBA Consulting would carry out a detailed survey and environmental assessment on the section of the river between Thornhill Bridge and Templehouse Lake.

This is to remove some of the obstructions to the flow in the river that have been identified by the Owenmore Drainage Committee.

Sligo County Council also says the effects on the Owenmorew River and its catchment, and on the downstream river to Ballisodare, will also be examined, including the effects on ecology.

The survey being done will also include costings for work to be done.
