Junior Tourism Minister can give no guarantees regarding future of Inishmurray Island boat tours

The Minister of State for Tourism says he cannot give any guarantees that boat tours will be able to run to Inishmurray Island this Summer.

The island off Co Sligo is famous for having one of Ireland’s best-preserved early monastic sites.

The Marine Survey Office (MSO) attached to the Department has warned a small number of commercial boat owners who provide day trips to the island that this practice must cease with immediate effect because of health and safety reasons.

Minister Brendan Griffin met with boat owners in Sligo this morning, and while he said he is hopeful of resolving the issuee, he couldn’t give any guarantees….

Meanwhile, Keith Clarke who has been running tours to the island for 32 years, says it is ridiculous that boat owners have been told they’ll been prosecuted if they continue to run tours to the island, and he says this has to be sorted as soon as possible….
