Campaigners renew effort to raise awareness on old railway system



A new effort is underway in Donegal to raise awareness of the once extensive railway system in the county.

In the mid-1800s, there were rail links between Strabane, Derry, Enniskillen, Stranorlar, Donegal Town, Killybegs and Glenties.

However, the lines began to close from 1947 to about 1960.

Despite this, many of the railway locomatives, railcars and rolling stock still survives in various museums.

Donna Maskery, of County Donegal Railway Restoration and manager of the Railway Heritage Centre in Donegal Town, has been telling Ocean FM News about their immediate plans to get more people to know — and even experience — the thrill of the railway:
