GPs referring patients to the North ‘proof’ of a broken healthcare system

GPs are now referring their patients directly to private hospitals in the North to avoid the frustrating waiting times in the republic.

The NAGP which is the association representing General Practitioners says the service is in crisis and no significant extra resources have been committed in the HSE’s service plan for 2018 announced this week.

Chair of the NAGP Dr. Andrew Jordan says, however, that doctors are now making use of the Cross Border Healthcare Directive which allows people to have their operation done in another EU member state and be reimbursed by the HSE.

Dr. Jordan says GPs are now referring more and more patients to the North and he says that this is proof that the health service is completely broken.
