Sligo to be named regional capital as part of Ireland 2040 plan



Sligo will be named regional capital of the northwest in the national planning framework next month.

This follows complaints that the draft plan — Ireland 2040 — failed to plan for any significant population growth north of a line between Dublin and Galway.

Councils, chambers of commerce and regional lobby groups protested at Sligo’s omission when Ireland 2040 was published in September.

With a population of just 20,000, Sligo will become a “designated centre for growth”, and the Chief Executive of Sligo Chamber of Commerce, Aidan Doyle says will increase employment going into the future:
