More housing needed to tackle problem of substandard accommodation



Tenants are being forced to accept substandard accomodation because they have no choice.

That’s according to a Sligo Councillor who has been reacting to the revelations in a Prime Time investigates programme that almost half of rented accommodation in every county in Ireland is substandard.

People Before Profit Councillor Gino O’Boyle says the only answer is for more housing to be built.

People on the Housing Assistance Programme rent from private landlords and he says these people face some of the biggest challenges.

He says if they refuse a house under the scheme they can lose their place which often forces them to accept substandard accommodation:
