‘Community car’ idea for rural areas



A new west of Ireland volunteer group wants a ‘Community Car’ to be set up in rural areas in an effort to stop people drinking and driving.

It’s one of a number of proposals to be made at the Ireland’s Volunteer and Designated Drivers Association national conference in Roscommon today.

The association was set up by Pat Coyle from County Mayo in memory of all those who have died in drink-related incidents on the roads of Connacht.

The idea is that the ‘community car’ would operate within a 10km radius of rural towns.

Spokesperson for the group, Ballymote woman Korena O’Hara says that the service would not only help prevent drink-driving but would also reduce rural isolation:
