The mayor of Sligo is opposing any moves to restore Sligo Borough Council, saying doing so would be setting up another layer of bureaucracy that’s not needed.

He was one of two Fine Gael councillors to vote against a motion at this week’s meeting of Sligo County Council calling on the local government minister to reinstate the borough council.

Nine councillors voted for the motion which was put forward by Fianna Fail Councillor Tom MacSharry.

The mayor, Cllr Hubert Keaney, and Cllr Dara Mulvey, both of Fine Gael voted against.

Cllr Keaney said the borough council did many good things.
