Leitrim bans the use of glyphosate weedkillers in public areas



Leitrim County Council has agreed to ban the use of glyphosate-based weedkillers in public areas.

A petition with over 1400 signatures was handed into the Cathaoirleach and the CEO of the Council by the Leitrim Environmental Network group.

The ban has come about as a result of a motion put down by Fianna Fail Councillor in north Leitrim Justin Warnock.

Glyphosate is a controversial chemical used most notably in the ‘Roundup’ weedkiller.

He says the Council will now look at organic alternatives to keep weeds at bay in public areas:
