Hundreds turn out to welcome home world champion



World champion Mona McSharry was given a hero’s welcome home by a crowd of about 400 people at North Sligo Sports Complex in Grange yesterday evening.

The 17-year-old Marlins Swim Club member returned from the World Junior Championships in Indianapolis on Saturday, with a gold and bronze medal.

She says she is not sure if her achievement has fully sunk in yet…

Mona claimed gold in the 100 metres breaststroke in the United States on the weekend before last, having won bronze in the 50 metres two days beforehand.

She says winning a medal in the first event took the pressure off…
