The former editor of The Sligo Champion Seamus Finn has died.
Appointed to the position in 1972 Mr Finn served as editor for almost 40 years.
He was an astute and respected political and current affairs commentator and during his time as editor of ‘The Champion,’ led numerous campaigns for the betterment of Sligo town and county.
They included calls for improvement of Sligo Port, a third bridge over the Garavogue River, an extension to Sligo General Hospital as well as numerous fundraising efforts for facilities such as the first kidney dialysis unit at the hospital.
In 2011, the then Mayor of Sligo, Cllr Rosaleen O’Grady bestowed on him the Freedom of the Borough of Sligo, the local authority’s highest honour, in acknowledgement of his career and contribution to Sligo.
He was predeceased by his wife Sheila, and is survived by two sons.
