More Leaving Cert students taking higher level papers

The almost 3400 Leaving Cert students in the North West who are getting their Leaving Cert results this morning are being urged not to compare points required for courses this year to last year.

For those hoping to on to third level, the first-round CAO offers will come out on Monday.

This is the first year of a new grading system which aims to move away from the old system of rote learning and include more continuous assessment.

The new system reduces the number of grades from 14 to 8.

It also appears more students are now taking higher level papers.
