Indian community in Sligo celebrates 70th anniversary of Independence



Indian people in Sligo have been celebrating the 70th anniversary of their country’s independence.

The celebrations took place yesterday, which was India Independence Day,.

It marks the occasion in 1947 when the UK Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act, transferring sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly.

Anirban Bhanja, president of the Indian Association in Sligo, has been telling Ocean Fm News, whey he feels it’s important for Indian people abroad to mark such occasions:

The Independence Day celebration took place at The Showgrounds in Sligo, home of Sligo Rovers, with whom a founder member of the Indian Association, the late Johnny Chadda, was deeply involved.

Because of that connection, Anirban Bhanja says Indian people in Sligo have a special regard for The Showgrounds:
