‘Hectic schedule’ prevents Canadian Prime Minister’s visit to Sligo

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has turned down an invitation from Sligo County Council to visit the town.

Mr Trudeau arrived in Ireland this morning for the first of his three day visit to the country.

He was invited to Sligo by then Mayor, Councillor Marie Casserly in May, following comments he made during a trip to Montreal by former Taoiseach Enda Kenny two months ago. Mr Trudeau mentioned he had spent time in Sligo as a teenager.

In her invitation, Councillor Casserly said any visit by Mr Trudeau to the region would ‘share and promote the beauty of Sligo’. However, the invitation was declined due to Mr Trudeau’s hectic schedule.

Councillor Casserly said she was disappointed that the Canadian Embassy had declined the offer, but said the invitation still stands should he visit again.
