Fine Gael rep calls for immediate action on permanent Cardio Cath Lab in Sligo

A Fine Gael representative in Sligo has called for the provision of a cardio cath lab at Sligo University Hospital.

The call comes following the death of a man on Sunday as he was being transferred to Cork because the heart centre at Waterford was closed.

The man went into cardiac arrest and died as he made his way to Cork University Hospital.

Fine Gael Executive for Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal Thomas Walsh says that the provision of a cath lab in Sligo is both necessary and urgent if such an incident is to be avoided in the North West.

There is a mobile angiography one day per week currently at Sligo University Hospital. But Mr Walsh says this ‘is not good enough’ and described the current service as ‘third world’.

He has also added his voice to calls for a national review of cardiac services across the country.
