Calls to provide coastguard with water buckets in event of further forest fires

There have been calls for Sligo County Council to liaise with the coastguard in relation to providing a water basket for the coastguard helicopter at Strandhill.

Water baskets were provided on behalf of the Air Corp during recent gorse fires on Killery Mountain close to the towns of both Ballintogher and Dromahair. Sinn Féin Councillor Thomas Healy said it was vital the council have the use of such a resource should such an event happen again.

Councillor Healy was reacting to a report to Sligo County Council from the chief fire officer outlining the events of May’s gorse fires.

Speaking to Ocean Fm News, he said that given the rough terrain and difficulty in which local fire services had in fighting the fire, it was vital that the helicopter be equipped with a water basket.
