More people visiting OPW heritage sites



Visitor numbers to heritage sites managed by the Office of Public Works across the region rose by approximately nine thousand last year in comparison to the previous year’s figures.

Visitor numbers to Carrowmore Tombs in Sligo rose by almost four thousand from 2015 to 42,000 in 2016. Staying in County Sligo and Sligo Abbey had two thousand more visitors in 2016 than the year previous.

While in County Leitrim, Parke’s Castle attracted 18,200 visitors in comparison to a total of 16,600 in 2015.

Visitor numbers to Boyle Abbey in County Roscommon stood at 7,800 in 2016, compared to 2015’s figure of 6,900.

Total visitor numbers to OPW sites rose by 1.7 million in 2016 from the previous year.
