Anti-fracking campaigners worldwide look to see how a Sligo TD’s bill led to a historic ban on fracking

Anti-fracking campaigners in countries around the world are now looking at Ireland after yesterday’s passage of Sligo/Leitrim TD Tony McLoughlin’s Bill in the Dail.

That’s according to Dr Aideen McLoughlin, of the group Good Energies Alliance, who says what happened yesterday in the Dail is already attracting attention from various parts of the U.S. and Europe.

Deputy McLoughlin says his Bill will ensure that the environment and communities in the North West of Ireland are protected from the affects of fracking.

It will now go before the Seanad and then, it’s expected, to the President to be signed into law.

Dr McLoughlin says there’s a particular interest in how such broad support was generated for the Bill, as well as the way it was worded.

Meanwhile, MEP Marian Harkin says the passage of Deputy McLoughlin’s Bill is an example of so-called ‘new politics’ at work.
