INHFA: New heritage bill would not lead to uncontrolled burning



Discussion on the new heritage bill is scheduled to be discussed in the Dail tomorrow.

The issue is the source of controversy.

A spokesperson for the Irish Wildlife Trust said this week that the legislation should be scrapped.

The bill, being put forward by Fine Gael Minister for Heritage Heather Humphreys would allow farmers to carry out controlled burning into the month of March.

It would also extent the hedgecutting season.

Colm O’Donnell of the Irish Natura and Hillfarmers Association is in favour of the bill but says that it would be on a trial basis to ensure that it works properly and it would not allow or condone uncontrolled burning but would allow farmers some flexibility.

He also is making a fresh appeal to the Agriculture Minister to ensure that farmers are not penalised for the recent burning that in many areas like Sligo and Leitrim got out of control:
