Donegal councillor highlights concerns over burial grounds

Donegal County Council is being urged to provide burial grounds across the county to cater for all religions and those of none.

The call comes following a motion put forward by Killybegs councillor Niamh Kennedy at yesterday’s meeting of of the council.

The Independent representative said that the issue was brought to her attention by constituents who have witnessed family members of one or no religion being buried by clergy of a different faith. She said this was an upsetting situation for many.

Speaking to North West Today, Councillor Kennedy said that the council had no plan or provision in place to cater for those of mixed marriages who wished to be buried together.

She said that with the population of Donegal becoming ever more multi-national, it was time for the local authorities to address this situation.
