Bill to ban fracking expected to pass in the Dail tonight



The bill to ban fracking on the island of Ireland is expected to pass in the Dail this evening.

The piece of legislation has been put forward by Sligo Leitrim Fine Gael TD Tony McLoughlin and has received cross party support.

Hydraulic Fracturing or ‘fracking’ is a process of extracting oil and gas from shale rock in the ground or other tight sandstones as found across counties Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Donegal and Clare.

Sinn Fein had proposed an amendment to the bill to ensure it includes off-shore activity as well.

However, Sinn Fein TD in Sligo Leitrim Martin Kenny told Ocean FM News today they they have decided to withdraw this amendment:
