Mayor hopes beaches can regain their coastal flags

The Mayor of Sligo says she hopes Mullaghamore and Enniscrone beaches can regain their Green Coast Awards.

It was announced today as part of the An Taisce Blue Flag and and Green Coast Awards that they have failed to retain this grade.

Now only one beach in Sligo has a blue flag while four beaches in south Donegal have retained their blue flag status.

Rosses Point is one of only five beaches nationwide to have retained both blue flag and green coast awards.

Bundoran, Murvagh, Fintra beach and Rossnowlagh in south Donegal have all retained their blue flag status.

While in Sligo, Dunmoran Strand and Streedagh have also retained their Green Coast Awards.

But there’s disappointment in Mullaghmore and Enniscrone as both popular beaches have failed to retain their Green Coast awards status due to the quality of the water not reaching the required ‘excellent’ status over the course of the year.

However, Mayor of Sligo Marie Casserly says the beaches are still of a very high standard and she hopes they can regain this important status again:
