R287 reopens after Killery Mountain gorse fire

The R287 Dromahair road from Sligo has been reopened following the major gorse fire on Killery mountain, near Ballintogher and Dromahair on the Sligo/Leitrim border.

Sligo County Council says this morning that while isolated pockets of fire remain, Sligo Fire Service has made major progress in controlling the forestry, gorse and brush fire, which broke out on Wednesday afternoon.

Part of the boardwalk through Slish Wood has been removed and members of the public are requested to away from the areas affected by the fire for their own safety.

It was one of the largest outbreaks in the region for some time and for a while, the Coast Guard helicopter had been flying overhead as it monitored the situation.

Meanwhile, as the dry weather continues, people are being urged to exercise caution so as to prevent further fires.
