Scanlon among those shocked by Theresa May’s election call

British Prime Minister Theresa May has caught everyone by surprise in calling a snap election due to be held on June 8th.

It comes as negotiations on Britain’s withdrawal of the EU are due to begin on April 29th.

For months, she dismissed the idea of an early poll, saying it would cause too much instability when an election was not due until 2020.

But today she believes her hand in negotiations in Brussels – as well as in Westminster – would be strengthened with an election mandate she believes she can win.

Among the Irish politicians shocked by the announcement was Sligo Leitrim Fianna Fail TD Eamon Scanlon.
