Call for ban on food imports into EU from Brazil



MEPs in the European Parliament have called on the European Commission to investigate why EU border checks failed to detect tainted food produce from Brazil.

MEPs last night debated the revelations from a two-year investigation by the Brazilian Federal Police.

It showed that potentially dangerous meat products were placed in the food chain.

Brazil is the world’s biggest exporter of red meat and poultry.

The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly is calling on the EU to place an immediate ban on imports of Brazilian beef produce to Europe.

He says the Brazilians should be subject to the same standard of scrutiny as food producers from within the EU:
