Dept. vets say animal welfare will be to fore in deciding future of labs



Senior veterinary officials say animal health welfare will be to the fore in deciding the future of the Regional Vet Labs around the country.

Dr. Donal Salmon and Dr. Martin Blake were two of three vets from the Department of Agriculture who addressed the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture this week.

It’s ahead of a decision on the future of the 6 labs around the country – 3 of which are flagged for closure.

One of those could be the one in Doonally in Sligo but the department officials confirmed to the committee that no decision has yet been made.

Donegal TD and agriculture spokesperson for Fianna Fail Charlie McConalogue said they were told that animal welfare, investment and ease of access are the three key things that are being considered:
