Leitrim only spending half of what it should be on upkeep of local roads



Only half the recommended funding is being spent to strengthen and resurface local roads in Leitrim.

Senior Roads Engineer at the Council Shay O’Connor confirmed to Councillors in the Manorhamilton Municipal District yesterday that the cut in roads funding is having a severe impact on the longterm state of the roads in the county.

This year’s allocation to Leitrim from Transport Infrastructure Ireland is €7.8m and while that’s an increase on last year it’s down from €14m for in 2011.

Speaking to Ocean FM News after the meeting, Mr. O’Connor said it means however that they are only spending half what they should be on maintaining roads and it’s having a longterm impact:
